Poinsettia (Euphorbia pulcherrima) is a popular ornamental plant best known for its brightly colored red, pink, white, or variegated bracts that surround its small yellow flowers. Native to Mexico and Central America, it has become one of the most iconic plants of the holiday season, widely used in festive displays and indoor décor.

Poinsettias are shrubs in their natural habitat, where they can grow 10–15 feet tall, but are typically sold as compact potted plants. They prefer bright, indirect light, moderate temperatures, and evenly moist—but not soggy—soil. The colorful bracts develop in response to short daylight hours, requiring long periods of darkness in fall to trigger their vibrant display.

While often believed to be highly toxic, poinsettias are only mildly irritating if ingested and can cause skin sensitivity in some individuals.

Valued for their striking color and seasonal association, poinsettias remain a symbol of Christmas and winter celebrations around the world.
